Some problems do not announce themselves. When an AC is cooling unevenly, cycling strangely or drawing more power than it should, it needs measuring rather than guessing.
Symptoms worth investigating
These usually point to something measurable rather than something visible.
- Cooling that fades after an hour
- The compressor cutting in and out too often
- A sudden jump in the electricity bill
- Ice on the copper line or coil
- The outdoor fan running but the compressor silent
- An error code on the display
What gets checked
A diagnostic visit is about readings, not opinions.
- Suction and discharge pressure
- Current draw against the rated load
- Capacitor and contactor condition
- Sensor and thermistor readings
- Airflow across the coil
- Temperature differential across the unit
Why a leak test matters before a gas refill
Refrigerant does not get consumed. If a unit is low on gas, it leaked somewhere. Topping it up without finding the leak means paying for the same refill again next season, so it is worth locating first.

My AC needs gas every year. Is that normal?
No. Refrigerant is a sealed system — if it is low, there is a leak. Repeated refills without a leak test are money spent on the same problem.
Can you tell what is wrong over the phone?
Sometimes we can narrow it down from the symptoms, but pressure and electrical readings need to be taken at the unit.
What if nothing is found?
Then you have a clean bill of health and a set of readings to compare against next season. That is a useful result too.
